Dear Parents & Students,
It seems like we just wrapped up the Holiday Concert, and now here is is almost Valentine's Day! Time is flying like always, and we have several events coming up that I would like to make you aware of:
★ First, tonight is our Ensembles Concert for our students in Symphonic I and Wind Ensemble (sorry for the short notice, I've been out with the flu... hopefully your student has said something about it?). This is mainly for students to have a dress rehearsal before Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, but parents are certainly welcome to attend! Brass ensembles will be performing in the Auditorium and Woodwind ensembles will be performing in the Band Hall. Performances will begin at 6:30pm and should be over by 7:30pm or a little after.
★ Second, we are excited to be hosting the UIL Region 12 Solo & Ensemble Contest here at SV this coming Saturday. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out with this event! If you have a student participating in this competition, there are several things they need to remember for Saturday: 1) Dress should be nice (no jeans or sneakers) and conservative, 2) they need to bring their instrument home with them on Friday, as the band hall will have percussion events performing all day long on Saturday and access will be restricted, 3) if they are playing a solo that was not assigned by Mr. Vereen, they should have their own original solo music (no copies) with the measures numbered, and 4) they should plan on arriving about an hour before their scheduled time in order to warm up, find their room and be adaptable to a schedule that can run ahead or behind.
★ Third, our annual Midwinter Concert is coming up next Tuesday (February 13) at 6:30pm in the Auditorium. Approximate performance times are as follows:
6:30pm - Jazz Band
6:50pm - Symphonic Band III (Yates)
7:15pm - Symphonic Band II (Woodfield)
7:45pm - Symphonic Band I (Vereen)
8:15pm - Wind Ensemble (Boening)
All these groups have been working very hard and would benefit from large supportive audiences. Please consider staying for at least one other group besides the one your student performs in!
★ Forth, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention begins on February 14th at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center right here in San Antonio. Two students from Smithson Valley will be featured at this convention as members of Texas All-State groups. Ian Weidmann (Alto Sax) has earned the 2nd Chair position in the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble I and will be performing with that group on February 17th. Josh Martinez (Clarinet) has earned a place in one of four All-State groups. He will audition one final time on the evening of the 14th for an overall chair order among the best clarinetists in the state and will be selected for one of the groups based on the chair he earns. Congrats to these two outstanding Smithson Valley musicians!!!!
★ Finally, the Smithson Valley Winter Guard is off to a great start with their competitive season, earning 1st place at their first competition. Keep watching for email announcements regarding upcoming performances, and: Congrats Guard... keep up the good work!
