News From Your Director

Dear Parents & Students,

Just a few things: First, a reminder about our concert make-up this Thursday at 7pm in the SVHS Cafeteria. The Horn Choir will be performing at 6:45, before the concert begins, so arrive a bit early if you can! After each band's performance, the students will need to change clothes and turn their concert uniform in to a quartermaster in the small band hall.

As the summer is quickly approaching, I wanted to mention several opportunities for students to progress on their instruments over the summer, while developing some new friendships and getting their "musical batteries" recharged. First, we generally have a sizable group from Smithson Valley attend the Texas Tech Band & Orchestra Camp (July10-16) each summer. This is a wonderful camp with a very long and rich history. We have some partial scholarships available for this camp... students should see Mr. Boening for more details. Parents should also know that there is an option on their website to purchase a seat on a charter bus that will take students up to Lubbock for the beginning of camp. The bus is chaperoned by an area band director who is also on staff at the camp. Then parents need only pick up their student at the end of the week after hearing their concert :) In addition to the Texas Tech Camp, I would also be remiss not to mention another fine camp at Baylor University (June 12-18), as well as three great local camps where students could attend as "day campers" at a reduced cost: Texas State (June 12-17), Texas Lutheran (June 26-July1), and UTSA (July 10-16). I hope that you will consider one of these great opportunities!!

All the best,

Matt Boening
